Who owns Mizani?

Mizani was founded in 1991 in Chicago by Terri Gardner – daughter of Black activist Edward Gardner. The aim was to set up a salon brand and develop products of high quality to meet the requirements of consumers and stylists who were Black. Mizani was acquired by L’Oreal in 1998.

Is Mizani for black hair?

Flaunting different hairstyles is an integral part of fashion and beauty among Blacks. Early on in Africa, hairstyles represented a person’s background and social status. People with this genetic makeup have hair that is curled, coiled, and wavy – they usually braid their hair in corkscrews, twists, and deadlocks to mention a few.

Mizani shampoos are chiefly designed and targeted at African American stylists and customers. All variants – Scalp Care Shampoo, Scalp Care Conditioner, Moisture Fusion Shampoo, True Textures Cream Cleansing Conditioner, True Textures Moisture Replenish Conditioner, and True Texture Moisture Replenish Shampoo – are formulated for excessively curly hair.

However, Mizani shampoo is not solely for Afro hair. It works well for all hair textures and covers open wavy and straight hair too.

Is Mizani Curly Girl approved?

Curly Girl is a technique for hair care developed by the author, Lorraine Massey. The method is meant for natural hair that has not undergone any chemical procedure. It advocates occasional hair washing and brushing and avoiding heating tools.

Although Mizani shampoo is formulated specifically for curly hair, it is not Curly Girl approved. Of the Curly Girl recommended ingredients, Mizani shampoo contains only coco betaine and disodium cocoamphodiacetate.

Is Mizani sulfate-free?

Not all Mizani shampoo variants are sulfate-free – they contain sodium Laureth sulfate. According to the International Journal of Toxicology, the chemical is ok to be used on hair and skin only for a brief period – and must be thoroughly rinsed.

Sodium Laureth sulfate removes natural oils from the hair, causing dryness and scalp irritation. Further, as Mizani is targeted for curly hair – the chemical is too harsh for the curls, it makes the curls dehydrated and brittle, and increases frizz. It is disapproved by Curly Girl.

For a sulfate-free variant – go for Mizani True Textures Moisture Replenish Shampoo.

Is Mizani cruelty-free?

According to the website of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Mizani tests its products on animals. This is contrary to L’Oreal’s pledge to not test any of its products on animals.

Does Mizani have silicone?

Yes, most Mizani shampoos have silicone. It has dimethicone – which is used as a moisturizer and conditioner. It builds up on the hair and prevents nourishment from getting absorbed, causing hair dryness – in the case of curly hair, it makes the curls look dull and undefined. The chemical is also not approved by Curly Girl.

You can use Mizani True Textures Moisture Replenish Shampoo if you want to avoid silicone.

Does Mizani shampoo contain hydroquinone?

Mizani shampoo products do not contain hydroquinone. The chemical is used by some brands as a preservative, fragrance ingredient, and antioxidant. However, it is a potential carcinogen that can cause hair loss and skin irritation.

Does Mizani shampoo contain alcohol?

The Mizani Scalp Care Shampoo contains benzyl alcohol, whereas Moisture Fusion Moisture Rich Shampoo and True Textures Moisture Replenish Shampoo are alcohol-free.

Benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative in the shampoo. It also kills lice on the hair and scalp. It can cause skin and eye irritation. However, it is a Curly Girl-approved ingredient to prevent the growth of micro-organisms in the curls.

Does Mizani shampoo contain caffeine?

Mizani shampoos do not contain caffeine. Caffeine is used in some shampoos to promote hair growth and provide condition and body to the hair. It can cause scalp irritation and itching.

Does Mizani cause hair loss?

A look at the ingredients feels like a walk in the garden – natural and pleasant. Mizani shampoo includes shea butter, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, coconut oil, rose water, menthol, honey, and jojoba oil – that is so much goodness!

Disappointingly, only some chemicals are extracted from these to formulate the products. The natural ingredients undergo strenuous processing and lose all their goodness.

Although there are no serious reports of Mizani shampoos causing hair loss, you must watch out for some ingredients used – Sodium laureth sulfate, parabens, fragrances, sodium chloride, salicylic acid.

Does Mizani cause dandruff?

Parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances in the shampoo can cause dandruff. Avoid the products containing these chemicals – Mizani True Textures Moisture Replenish Shampoo does not contain parabens and sulfates.

If you already have dandruff, try Mizani Scalp Care Anti-Dandruff Shampoo. Its formulation removes bacteria that result in flaking.

Does Mizani cause acne?

Quite possibly! Shampoos that are oil-based and have ingredients like silicones, jojoba oil, sodium laureth sulfate, coconut butter, and shea butter carry a high risk for acne. Mizani shampoos are essentially made of these ingredients – so, you can avoid them if you have acne.
