Who owns Mizani?
Mizani was founded in 1991 in Chicago by Terri Gardner – daughter of Black activist Edward Gardner. The aim was to set up a salon brand and develop products of high quality to meet the requirements of consumers and stylists who were Black. Mizani was acquired by L’Oreal in 1998.

Is Mizani sulfate-free?
Not all Mizani shampoo variants are sulfate-free – they contain sodium Laureth sulfate. According to the International Journal of Toxicology, the chemical is ok to be used on hair and skin only for a brief period – and must be thoroughly rinsed.
Sodium Laureth sulfate removes natural oils from the hair, causing dryness and scalp irritation. Further, as Mizani is targeted for curly hair – the chemical is too harsh for the curls, it makes the curls dehydrated and brittle, and increases frizz. It is disapproved by Curly Girl.
