Does Ivory Soap Have Fragrance?

Ivory Soap

Ivory soaps do contain different fragrances. The two fragrances used are the original scent and aloe vera. These are the distinctive scents that characterize the signature Ivory Gentle Bar Soaps.

None of them are fragrance-free. Only some body washes from the brand are 100% free of any added scents. The Ivory Bar Soaps are 99.44% pure soap with very few additives. It is also dermatologically tested and does not contain any skin-irritating dyes. Plus, this soap floats!

What Does Ivory Bar Soap Smell Like?

Ivory Bar Soap has a gentle, clean, and fresh smell. The fragrances have altered in the past couple of years from the original composition. Today, the original scent features a warmer, spicier undertone of ginger.

Ginger is a very nuanced smell, which is also why the Ivory original bar soap smells slightly different to each person. It can be slightly woody or pungent, but never too strong.

People do expect a rather buttery softness because of the look. But while Ivory bar soap is mellow, it is also slightly acidic.

The Ivory Aloe Gentle Bar Soap has a more crisp, bright tone. It is cooling and soothing to the nose as well as the skin, leaving you feeling invigorated and youthful. Ivory uses a bunch of different fragrance ingredients to create these scents.

What Fragrance Ingredients Does Ivory Bar Soap use?

It is important to note that Ivory Bar Soaps do not use any added heavy perfumes or scents. This means that natural or synthetic perfumes have not been added to create a specific fragrance profile, such as floral, fruity, woody, and others.

But, Ivory does use other chemicals that have their primary purpose but also mask the smell of the other chemicals. For example, aloe vera is added primarily to moisturize and soothe the skin. But in incorporating aloe into the soap, it also gives off a naturally pleasant smell.

Similarly, in the original Ivory soap as well, fragrance components have been added to neutralize bad odors. These fragrance ingredients don’t impart an obvious smell; rather they additionally provide a wholesome aroma.

The Ivory Original Gentle Bar Soap uses the following scent-enhancing ingredients.

  • Citronellal /Citronellol

This fragrance compound can be used as an essential oil. In any form, it is an antimicrobial that reduces sweat and oil build-up. It also imparts a citrusy, herbaceous scent.

  • Dipropylene Glycol

This compound is a solvent and emulsifier that enables the mixing of oil and water-based ingredients. It also regulates thickness and maintains chemical stability.

  •  Geraniol

This terpenoid compound has antiseptic properties that keep skin infections and acne at bay. It also imparts a rosy, floral smell to soaps.

The Ivory Aloe Vera Gentle Bath Soap has some extra ingredients. Of these, a few have active functions in addition to masking or providing a light scent. The main additives are listed below: for masking and to provide a light scent.

  • 2,6- Dimethyl-7-Octen-2-Ol, 2-Buten-1-Ol, 3-Methyl-1-Acetate, and 3-Cyclohexene-1-Carboxaldehyde, 1-Methyl-4-(4-Methylpentyl)

These ester compounds lend the soaps different light, soft scents. These include berry, citrus, lemon, and other fruity aromas.

But they also function as either plant or human metabolites. This means that they extract the functional benefits from compounds naturally found in plants or the human body.

These could be antioxidants, astringents, skin repair and restorative compounds or they could make the skin healthy and glowy. Some also function as solvents that help dissolve certain chemicals which are water-insoluble.

  • Linalool

This fragrance ingredient gels well with body soaps since it has antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it useful for people suffering from eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, by reducing the triggers for breakouts.

It can be extracted from rosewood, orange, or coriander essential oils to create a delicate lavender-scented compound.

  • Gamma-Undactalone, Isoamyl Acetate and Methyl-dihydro-jasmonate

These synthetic compounds mimic the scents of jasmine, peach, apricot, bananas, and other milky fragrances. They also perform the additional function of either benign solvents or fixatives.

These fixatives help the sheer, clean scent to stay or linger on your skin for a longer period.

  • Triethyl Citrate

This versatile compound is a diluent, preservative, stabilizer, and solvent all at once. An almost odorless component, it does have mild whiffs of plummy, and jammy goodness. It enables solid fragrance components to dissolve easily during the saponification (soap-making) process.

Ivory provides full transparency about its ingredients and the fragrance sub-components.
